Canon Lewis joined the staff as Time Certain Rector on September 15, 2010. In November 2014, he was named Rector of Christ and St. Luke’s.
A native of Westchester, New York, Canon Lewis is a graduate of William and Mary (A.B., M.Ed.) and the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia. He has also studied at St. George’s College, Jerusalem, and completed the Residency Program in Pastoral Psychotherapy through the Tidewater Pastoral Counseling Services as well as the Servant Leader Formation Program which trains parish consultants.
Prior to being appointed as Rector of Christ and St. Luke’s, Canon Lewis served as Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of Southern Virginia (2003 – 2010). In this capacity, his portfolio included overseeing clergy and parish transitions in ordained leadership, the ordination process, crisis intervention and leadership development, the Fresh Start Program for clergy in transition and parish consultants. Nationally, he has served as Convener of the Transition Ministry Conference. Presently, he sits on the advisory board of the Interim Ministry Network. Canon Lewis was also a nominee for Bishop of Northern California and Bishop of Virginia.
He is a noted workshop leader in the areas of prayer and spirituality, as well as congregational and organizational leadership and redevelopment. Canon Lewis has served a number of churches and offices in the Diocese of Southern Virginia. He was the founder of the Spirituality Commission for the diocese, which introduced the practice of spiritual direction into the general ministry of the diocese.
Canon Lewis is married to Cathy Midkiff Lewis, a local radio and television broadcaster and civic leader. They have one daughter, Anna, who recently finished Graduate Studies at the Unviersity of St. Andrew’s, Scotland.
