BACH: The Musical Offering
March 1 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pmFree – $10
The Eighth Annual Allen Shaffer Concert
The saga of the Musical Offering begins in May 1747, when Bach met Frederick the Great in his residence in Potsdam. The King asked Bach to improvise a three-voice fugue on a musical theme that he had composed. Afterwards, the King challenged Bach to improvise a six-voice fugue on the same subject. The result is the Musical Offering, a collection of canons and fugues all based on the King’s musical theme. Director of Music Emeritus Allen Shaffer gathers incredible chamber musicians to perform the monumental collection on various instruments, highlighting the beauty of Bach’s counterpoint.
