NEST: Volunteers Needed!

Christ and St. Luke's participate in the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (NEST) together with neighboring churches.  Our homeless neighbors receive dinner, shelter for the evening, and breakfast in Lloyd Hall.  This year, we will be hosting NEST from December 28 - January 4. We need volunteers for all shifts! Please contact James Lewis or call 757-617-4616 for more information.

Caring for Creation

Give a thoughtful gift of an amaryllis that “gives twice.” Your friends will be delighted to receive flowers and to know the proceeds support serveral causes that benefit our environment. Look for us in the Bell Tower after both services this Sunday.
Earth Saver: The World Health Organization reports that 92% of the world’s people live in areas where air quality falls below clean air standards. Annually about 6.5 million people die from inhaling tiny particles from power plants, industry and vehicles which cause cancer, stokes, heart disease and other health issues. Even in the Americas, cities like New York and Los Angeles fail to meet quality air standards. Lives could be saved if air pollution is reduced.  Source  -  The Week

Memorial Flowers for Christmas

Flowers will be adorning the church for the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services and a list of donors and those they are wishing to honor will be printed in the bulletin. It is a great way to remember loved ones during the holidays. All memorial envelopes must be submitted by Friday, December 16.

A Journey to the Stable, Christmas Pageant

The Christmas pageant will be on Friday, December 24, Christmas Eve, at 4:30 p.m. The rehearsal for the pageant will be Wednesday, December 21 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Over the next few weeks, the children will be learning two simple songs during Children’s Chapel. Please practice the following words with your children:
One holy night in Bethlehem the air was filled with song.
Angelic voices sang on high and shepherds piped along:
Sing glory, glory, gloria! God's love is given birth!
Be not afraid! Sing gloria, and peace to all the earth.
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus lay down His sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

New Book about Christ & St. Luke's

Many thanks to our own Sigur Whitaker for researching and writing this book!  The story of Christ & St. Luke's Episcopal Church envelops the story of the early days of our nation through the tumultuous times of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, through good times and bad. For those people who traveled to the shore of Virginia in 1607, the church was a mainstay and comfort in their lives.  Today, nearly 400 years later, the church, with its magnificent edifice, continues to be a beacon in times of trouble and a place in which to give thanks to God for all the blessings we enjoy. The book will be available soon.  It is a fundraiser for the church's restoration campaign to ensure this 100+ year old building will continue to be a part of the Norfolk landscape for the next hundred years.
