OUTREACH Christ and Saint Luke’s Church proclaims the love of Christ in the church in the community in the world through its ministries. It is in reaching out that our church comes alive. Where can you best put your time and talent to work for the uplifting of God’s beloved family? Why not consider a new outreach ministry?
The Beehive Our new home is around the corner from the office to the left. We are excited about our new space and hope you will continue to support us. Remember you can always shop through the Amazon link found on the Christ and Saint Luke's website. Again, many thanks to all of you for your support. We will see you soon. All proceeds from the Beehive go to the Outreach ministries of the church. The shop is staffed by volunteers. Volunteer opportunities include: a two hour commitment once a week to run the store. Friends of Nicaragua and Nicaraguan Mission With thousands of people left homeless and without medical care after Hurricane Mitch, Christ and Saint Luke’s sent a medical team to Chaguitillo, Nicaragua where we established a relationship with members of Saint John the Baptist Episcopal Church. In addition to our annual medical and dental clinics, we have increased our focus on the church supported school. Positions useful for the mission team are not limited to: translator, doctor, nurse, pharmacist, computer specialist, electrician, plumber, educator, dentist, dental hygienist, dental assistant, engineer and handyman. We also need a support team here for writing articles in EXCEL, fundraising, Easter Egg making and selling, letter writing and developing hands-on lesson plans for secondary level students. Lunch Ministry Christ and Saint Luke’s serves lunch to those in need every Thursday from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Volunteers coordinate food purchases from the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia and prepare and serve the food, set up, clean up and sometimes provide seasonal items like Christmas cookies or Easter eggs. All are welcome to join this creative and fulfilling ministry. Volunteer opportunities include: setting tables - children accompanied by a parent are invited to help set tables on Thursday mornings;food preparation, serving, clean up ; driving to FoodBank or other stores. Hours are flexible. You do not need to commit to every week. Occasionally, help is needed at a time other than Thursday morning. We also welcome financial or food item donations. N.E.S.T (Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team) For one week in the winter, Christ and Saint Luke’s becomes a homeless shelter as part of the Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (N.E.S.T.), a chain of churches relaying this responsibility during the coldest part of the season. We traditionally host the first week in January (including New Year's Eve). We provide dinner and breakfast each day and a warm, dry place to sleep. We require volunteers daily for numerous functions: food prep(4 people); dishes(4); dining room setup and servers (4-6) ; sign-in(3); set-up (4-6); over-night watch (3) Contact James Lewis jamesvblewis@verizon.net
R.E.A.C.H. (Mission of the Holy Spirit) The vision of REACH is to empower inner city youth to cope with their society in today’s world. Activates are held at Knox Presbyterian Church. Volunteer opportunities include:one-on-one tutors in group setting to help children prepare homework and study skills Thursdays, 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (minimal training available);an accompanist to play hymns on the piano or keyboard during Sunday evening chapel from 6:00 -7:30 p.m.; coordinator for choir activities - cross check concert schedule and ensure choir robes are ready for use; back-up van drivers for activities using REACH van.
The Angel Tree The Angel Tree allows us to provide Christmas gifts to needy children in our community. However, it is also a vehicle for us to experience the blessing of giving. Volunteer opportunities include: assembling Angel Tree packets for Angel sponsorship, staff tables for distribution of sponsorship of Angels,purchase gifts for Angels to share your blessings with children,assist on Sundays with collection/storage of Angel Tree gifts, and assisting with delivery of Angel Tree gifts.
